Our journey toward healthier eating began early in our marriage with a conversation over dinner. DeLoris was studying home economics at Howard University, where her coursework included nutrition. As we prepared to welcome our first child, what she was learning raised an important question about the meals we would serve our family.
Looking at our dinner one day, she asked, in essence, “How can I serve this to my family, knowing what I know about good nutrition?” Until then, our choices had largely been determined by what tasted good. We began to consider more carefully what would nourish us.
Both of us had grown up in the South, surrounded by excellent cooks. Food was an important part of family life, and we wanted to preserve the enjoyment of gathering around a good meal. DeLoris was convinced that healthier eating could still be delicious. Through thoughtful selections and preparation, she showed that nourishment and good taste could belong at the same table.
As Christians, we also wanted to understand how our faith should guide these choices. First Corinthians 10:31 says, “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God” (KJV). That verse invited us to think about eating as part of our daily walk with the Lord.
We began searching the Scriptures together. What did God have to say about food? How could our meals reflect our care for one another and our desire to honor Him?Those questions became the beginning of a journey that shaped our home and eventually our ministry.
